The price of Ika-meshi (SQUID meal) in southern Hokkaido increased from 650 yen to 780 yen from August 20th to 780, which was the increase in the price in three years, indicating that the global squid supply shortage led to the rise in the price of the final product.
In May 2016, the number of squid population in Japan fell to 40 thousand tons, the ring ratio decreased by 7%. Argentina and South Korea were the main supply countries in Japan, and the supply of Japan was declining in the first half of last year. Due to shortage of raw materials, some squid processing plants in Japan are facing a shutdown. The processors request the government to expand imports and fill gaps in raw materials.
Peru is a big squid production country, but influenced by El Nino phenomenon, Peru squid production is low and prices are rising sharply. In 2016, the output fell by more than 70%. The output of squid in Argentina and Falkland Islands has also been reduced to varying degrees. The industry believes that squid production capacity recovery will take at least 2-3 years.
